Let’s shape the future - University of Antwerp

The University of Antwerp is a dynamic, forward-thinking, European university. We offer an innovative academic education to more than 20000 students, conduct pioneering scientific research and play an important service-providing role in society. We are one of the largest, most international and most innovative employers in the region. With more than 6000 employees from 100 different countries, we are helping to build tomorrow's world every day. Through top scientific research, we push back boundaries and set a course for the future – a future that you can help to shape.

The Department of Biology in the Faculty of Sciences is looking for a full-time doctoral scholarship holder in the field of evolutionary biomechanics of Darwin's finches.

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of functional morphology. You will focus on the cranial system of Darwin’s finches with the aim to reconstruct the evolutionary history of biomechanical traits to explain how the cranial systems of Darwin’s finches have diverged into biting specialists versus agile-beaked species, and how this impacts their feeding performance and songs. Your research will answer, amongst others, the following questions: can variation in beak kinematics explain differences in seed handling and song complexity in granivorous ground finches of the Galápagos? What are the biomechanical reasons for variation in beak movement frequencies? How did beak motion biomechanics change in the evolutionary history of Darwin’s finches?
  • You will work at the laboratory for Functional Morphology (uantwerpen.be/en/rg/funmorph/) where we investigate how organisms function and evolve. Many of our projects take a mechanistic approach: we try to understand how organismal systems work, i.e. how body parts (primarily of the movement and feeding apparatus) and processes interact.
  • You will conduct field work to perform high-speed videography of feeding and singing Darwin’s finches at the Galápagos islands, and perform morphological analyses and biomechanical model simulation in the lab.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the Department of Biology.

Profile

  • You hold a Master degree in Biology or equivalent, or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • You have strong affinity for research on functional and evolutionary morphology of musculoskeletal systems.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You have a basic knowledge of programming (e.g. MATLAB, Excel VBA).
  • You have the proper organizational skills, mindset, and motivation to conduct fieldwork expeditions for several months.
  • Having experience with nature videography or photography is a plus.
  • Your English is fluent, both speaking and writing. Speaking Spanish is a plus.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
  • The planned start date is 1 November 2023 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You will do most of your work at Campus Drie Eiken in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
